When's the Best Time to Get Those Cabinets In?
You might figure any time is fine, right? Well, not exactly. While we don't deal with harsh winters like they do back east, our weather still has its own little quirks. For cabinet installation, I usually tell people that late spring, early summer, or early fall are your best bets. Why those times, specifically?
Late Spring (April-May): The 'May Gray' and 'June Gloom' might sound a little dreary, but they actually bring some pretty moderate humidity. It's not too dry, not too damp, and the temperatures are usually just right. This is perfect for wood products to get used to their new home.
Early Summer (June-July): Before those truly scorching heat waves hit, we often get some lovely, stable weather. Just make sure you keep your home cool and comfy during the installation. Extreme heat can make wood expand, and you definitely don't want that.
Early Fall (September-October): Once the summer heat breaks, but before any serious rain starts, these months offer a similar sweet spot to spring. The air tends to be drier and the temperatures are just plain comfortable.
What you really want to steer clear of, if you can, is the dead of winter when it's cold and damp, or the absolute peak of summer when we get those triple-digit heat spikes. Big swings in temperature and humidity can make wood expand and contract too fast, which can lead to problems like warping, cracking, or doors that just don't quite line up anymore.
How Our Local Climate Actually Affects Your Cabinets
Norwalk's fairly close to the coast, but we still get our share of temperature ups and downs. You know how some days it's foggy and damp in the morning, then suddenly blazing hot by afternoon? That's exactly what I'm talking about. Wood is a natural material, and it breathes, you see. It soaks up moisture when the air is humid and lets it go when things get dry.
If we install cabinets during a really humid period, and then the air dries out a lot, the wood can shrink. This might mean small gaps popping up, or doors and drawers feeling a little loose. The opposite happens if we install during a super dry spell and then the humidity climbs – the wood expands. That can cause doors to stick or drawers to rub, and who needs that aggravation?
I've seen it happen in some of the older homes around the Civic Center area, where maybe the AC isn't quite as consistent, or windows are left open more often. It's usually not a disaster, but it can be annoying. That's why we always suggest letting your new cabinets sit in your home for a few days before we install them, just so they can get used to your home's specific environment.
Keeping Your Investment Looking Good All Year
Once your beautiful new kitchen is in, you want it to stay that way, right? Here's what I tell all my clients:
Keep Your Indoor Climate Steady: Try to keep your home's temperature and humidity as stable as you can. If you've got AC, use it. If it's humid outside, run a dehumidifier if you notice things feeling damp. And if it's super dry, a humidifier can actually help.
Wipe Up Spills Right Away: This might seem obvious, but even tiny drips of water or cooking oils can eventually damage cabinet finishes if you let them sit.
Use Gentle Cleaners: Harsh chemicals are a definite no-go. A soft cloth with just a little mild soap and water is usually all you need. Always, always test it in a hidden spot first, though.
Watch the Heat: Don't leave your oven door open for long periods after cooking, especially if it's blasting hot air directly at your cabinet fronts. Over time, that can cause problems with the finish or even the wood itself.
